StandUp CampaignStand Up campaign days of action Friday 16 - Sunday 18th October 2009

The Stand Up campaign is a United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC) initiative which supports and empowers citizens to take action against poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This year's theme is Stand Up, Take Action - End Poverty Now.

Last year 116 million people worldwide took part, including 770 in New Zealand. This year the UNMC and its partners are aiming to get over 7,000 Kiwis to Stand Up and send a message to world leaders that we want to see action against global poverty. For that, they will need your help!

The Council for International Development (CID) is running a youth and schools Stand Up, Take Action programme, targeted at young people aged 13-18. We are encouraging young people to put on Stand Up events in their school, place of worship or local community. Each participating school/ youth group will receive free of charge:

  • help and advice from a dedicated Stand Up team at CID;
  • a resource kit on the Millennium Development Goals;
  • places on a one day Stand Up Champions workshop in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch (outside school hours) full of practical, fun, educational activities;
  • Posters, stickers, leaflets and other freebies;
  • A Stand Up Action Pack full of practical stuff to help you plan and promote your event.

Joining the Stand Up, Take Action youth and schools programme is easy. It can be as simple as reading the Stand Up pledge in your school assembly, or youth group meeting. However, the only limit is your imagination! For more information about joining the Stand Up, Take Action youth and schools programme contact Edmund on campaigns@cid.org.nz.

As well as the youth and schools programme, community groups across New Zealand will be organising their own Stand Up events. There will be live music, free food and yoga in Wellington's Civic Square on Saturday October 17th, organised by the Art of Living. Micah Challenge will be arranging special prayer meetings and church services on Sunday 18th October.

If you would like to hold your own Stand Up, Take Action event, please contact Bridget on standup@cid.org.nz
