Photo Competition 2023
CID would like to thank all organisations and photographers who submitted for the 2023 Photo Competition. The photos captured a multitude of people, countries, projects, experiences, and lived realities – all in a positive, dignified, and empowering light.
Entries were judged on originality, narrative, and composition. The winners and runner up of the CID Photo Competition 2023 were announced at the awards ceremony at the Official Conference Dinner on Wednesday 20th September at the Banquet Hall, Parliament.

A smiling beauty in the Solomon Islands, who is from one of the villages Tearfund is working in to prevent human trafficking and improve rural livelihood.

Weaver Anita with Valerian Handicrafts in a remote village in Jessore, Bangladesh. Her ability to use her intricate basketry weaving skills to earn an income whilst working from home enables her to remain in her ancestral village and educate the next generation.

16-year-old Junior plants seedlings in a community garden established with support from Save the Children to promote climate resilience, nutrition, and improved livelihoods.

Leah, 7, Makerina, 10, and Iliana, 15, learning how to tie dye during a Kids Club session. This is a community-led initiative supported by Save the Children that provides greater safety for children and young people in Suva’s informal settlements and provides opportunities for them to learn skills and develop friendships.

The photo was taken in Sumbawa Indonesia, and captures a female farmers group in Kuta Village harvesting tomatoes. SurfAid works with these groups to teach members about sustainable agricultural practices, nutrition, and income generation.

This is a new category which aims to capture and celebrate the work and photography of local partners and people.

The photo depicts a mother with her two children in the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, planning their daily meals. The nutrition calendar puts into practice the skills parents learn from local health volunteers during nutrition sessions and cooking classes supported by SurfAid.
Runner up
John Mark, Save the Children
This photo was taken by 13-year-old John Mark in the Solomon Islands, and demonstrates the impact of rising sea levels on a community. Mark partnered with Save the Children on a child-led climate campaign.
