Saturday marked both the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a yearly campaign running until Human Rights day on December 10.
Violence against women is one of the most “prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world.” It is estimated that 736 million women, or almost a third, of women globally have experienced gender based violence. In 2022, almost 89,000 women and girls were killed intentionally, the largest femicide numbers in two decades.
With only 5% of government aid targeting combatting violence against women and girls and less than 0.2% focused on prevention, this year’s campaign uses the #NoExcuse slogan to urge more investment in tackling the issue.
