A press release from Oxfam, CARE International and the Danish Refugee Council addresses the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with an estimated 10 million people in urgent need of assistance. 1,400 people have been killed in the nation this year due to conflict, and there are increasingly severe levels of sexual violence, displacement, hunger and disease outbreak.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) are particularly concerned about the situation in the Kivu region, where around one million people have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the M23 rebel group. They call for more effective action from international NGOs to support those in need.
The situation in North Kivu has been described as “alarming” by Raphaël Piret, MSF country representative in DRC. “You only have to look at the appalling conditions in which people are living in on the outskirts of the provincial capital, Goma, to realise that the response is insufficient, despite the fact that there are many humanitarian organisations working in eastern DRC,” he says.
