About Habitat for Humanity New Zealand

Mā te whakaruruhau hei whakamana ~ Through shelter we empower.

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand (HFHNZ) is a charity working throughout NZ and the Pacific to build stability, strength and self-reliance through shelter. Habitat for Humanity has a vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live; its mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

The International Programmes team within Habitat for Humanity New Zealand leads the organisation’s international development and humanitarian programming in the Pacific. We work closely with Pacific partners to implement these programmes on the ground. Working through our Habitat for Humanity International Theory of Change we programme across three inter-connected spheres: Community, Sector and Societal. This enables us to impact systemic issues in the housing ecosystem that are contributing to inadequate housing.

The role

You will be joining a collegial, capable and motivated team who love their work and are great at what they do. As the Sector and Societal Manager, you’ll work with local partners in Fiji, Samoa and Tonga to implement outcomes of the Negotiated Partnerships fund related to sectoral change and societal change in the housing eco-system in each partner country.

This will involve close collaboration with local partners to:

  • Organise local and regional Housing Forums to bring together relevant housing stakeholders (Government, NGOs, and private sector) to discuss and seek solutions for local housing issues.
  • Develop housing support resources that collate work done at sector and societal levels to bring about change to systemic barriers to quality housing.
  • Manage research and implementation of housing affordability solutions in Fiji and Samoa.

The role will also take on the responsibilities of being the Country Manager for one of our Pacific Partners. Some overseas travel (approx. 3+ trips per year) will be required.  The role is part-time (0.8 FTE), with some flexibility.

About you:

We’re looking for someone with all or some of the following;

  • A Masters or tertiary qualification in a relevant field (e.g. development studies, international relations, public health or education).
  • 3+ years of work experience in international development or a relevant field.
  • Expertise in research and advocacy in the Pacific.
  • Understanding of the housing eco-system.
  • Experience working with Governments, NGO’s and other key stakeholders and the confidence to positively represent and influence stakeholders.
  • Sound understanding of best-practice standards in International Development.
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills, particularly in a Pacific context with the ability to facilitate positive outcomes where multiple interests are at stake.
  • Experience working or living in a Pacific Islands country.
  • Ability to speak a Pacific language and/or cultural competence, especially working with Māori, Pacific, and internationally based partners.
  • A skilled organiser, with the ability to handle competing priorities and multiple deadlines.
  • Competent computer use.
  • Experience working in a high-pressure environment.

In return, we offer:

  • A capable, motivated and supportive team environment.
  • Great connection with local, passionate partners in the Pacific, doing inspiring work in their countries.
  • The opportunity to work between our office (in Ellerslie Auckland) and from home.  Flexibility with location/hours of work may be available for the right candidate.
