ACAPS, a Geneva based analysis project launched to support humanitarian work, have released a report outlining the anticipated humanitarian impact of this year’s El Niño.
The report gives insight into understanding the weather phenomenon, the main humanitarian impacts and a breakdown of consequences by region. In particular, countries already vulnerable and facing humanitarian crisis are expected to experience intensified heatwaves, wildfires, floods, droughts, and epidemics.
As a whole, global warming will be exacerbated – with temperatures exceeding a 1.5°C increase forecasted on multiple occasions. Preliminary analysis is showing that already July 2023 is expected to be the hottest month experienced on record.
