Last week on September 28, the International Day for Universal Access to Information was celebrated globally, which promotes open, free and reliable sources of information, and equitable access to information.
Mariam Mathew, the Pacific Regional Advisor at Transparency International, has produced an article on the issue of public information access in the Pacific. “Having access to such information is not only a right, but also a critical tool to hold people in power accountable”, she writes.
She speaks of the recent attempts of media and information control in Papua New Guinea, specifically in relation to the recent elections, and the Solomon Islands. She calls for “media freedom and legislation enabling access to public information need to be in place across all Pacific countries.”
