Research has revealed that Papua New Guinea (PNG) is among the top three countries in the world with the highest levels of lifetime intimate partner violence towards women. The report was supported by the ANU-UPNG Partnership, and says “spousal violence is endemic” in the nation.
Additionally, the research clarifies some perceptions around domestic violence in PNG. It is revealed that educated, urban residing women are more likely to be victims of spousal violence. Although not as much as men, women are also significant perpetrators but most often by those who are also victims.
The report ultimately suggests that addressing problematic social and cultural norms in the nation is crucial in reducing domestic violence.
