At the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) climate summit held in London last week, individuals from six PAC Pacific nations called for reduced emissions in international shipping to align with the 1.5 degree threshold.
PAC’s original members include Marshall Islands, Fiji, Tuvalu, Tonga, Solomon Islands and Kiribati, later joined by Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Samoa.
John Taukave, East-West Centre Fellow and researcher for 6 PAC, spoke to the significance of the group, and their requests, at a panel discussion during the meeting. “This alliance is recognised as being catalytic to keeping 1.5 degrees alive in these critical negotiations, and is progressing, the only policy package that is fully 1.5 aligned.”
