Last week, Mark Brown, Pacific Islands Forum Chair and Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, made a statement endorsing the new UN high seas treaty. The treaty has been in the works for around two decades, but is finally being implemented to coordinate the protection international waters, which makes up two thirds of the world's oceans.
“Our Pacific people are the custodians of the largest Ocean on this earth and the health of our Ocean remains a key priority for our region and our Forum Family”, says Brown. “When this treaty enters into force, we as ocean states, will be further empowered to sustainably and equitably manage and protect the high seas and its resources.”
The treaty works aims to conserve 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.
