Last week, extreme protests erupted in Syria – originally in relation to the deep economic crisis the nation is suffering from, but since evolving into a protest of political nature.
Beginning in the Sweida Province in South Syria following the eradication of fuel subsidy, the protests have become more widespread with broader, anti-government messaging. Activists are now ultimately calling for the removal of President Bashar al-Assad from power.
There is concern as many are noticing the similarities between this and the 2011 protests, which sparked years of civil war and humanitarian emergency that have ensued.
