UNRWA Pledges Neutrality and Integrity Following Independent Review

Posted on 03 May 2024

Following a comprehensive independent review, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has pledged to uphold the highest standards of neutrality and integrity. The report, led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, commends UNRWA for its extensive mechanisms to ensure neutrality and offers over 50 recommendations to enhance its operations. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini welcomed the findings, emphasizing the agency’s dedication to implementing the recommendations and updating its response plan. This commitment comes at a critical time as UNRWA continues to provide vital support amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza, reinforcing its role as a pillar of humanitarian aid and a beacon of hope for Palestine refugees.

The agency’s challenges are manifold, including the tragic loss of 180 staff members and at least 400 individuals seeking UN protection. Moreover, over 160 UNRWA premises have suffered damage or complete destruction due to hostilities. These incidents underscore the urgent need for an independent investigation and accountability for the blatant disregard of UN premises, staff, and operations. Lazzarini’s address to the Security Council highlighted the attacks against UNRWA, which he believes are motivated not by neutrality issues but by attempts to strip Palestinians of their refugee status. As UNRWA stands firm against such adversity, the international community’s unwavering support remains crucial for the agency to continue its indispensable work.
