On October 8, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Northwestern Afghanistan, killing more than 2400 people according to the Taliban. This is now amongst the deadliest earthquakes this year globally.
The Taliban have called on international aid groups to help with relief efforts, stating “the earthquake hit very remote and poor areas. Many of them are refugees who recently arrived back from Iran and Pakistan. We definitely need international help.”
The United Nations has deployed UNICEF into the area, providing essential food, health and hygiene packs and clothing items. The UN Secretary General has called on the international community to come together and provide aid and support for Afghanistan.
